Behind the Name: Why We Call Ourselves Cultured

It is a word with two meanings — and we chose it deliberately. The story behind Cultured Cookie Co.

Behind the Name: Why We Call Ourselves Cultured
# One Word, Two Meanings When we were naming the brand, we kept coming back to one word: *cultured*. It was almost too on-the-nose. But the more we sat with it, the more right it felt. ## Meaning One: The Process In food science, *cultured* refers to ingredients that have undergone fermentation — cultured butter, cultured cream, cultured dough. It signals time, care, and a process that changes something at a molecular level. That's exactly what we do. Our dough ferments for 48 hours. Our butter is browned until it transforms. Nothing is rushed because rushing is the enemy of flavour. ## Meaning Two: The Cookie There's an older meaning of *cultured* that we love just as much: refined, considered, made with intention. The Indian cookie market has historically been dominated by mass-produced, shelf-stable products built for scale. We wanted to make something that belonged in a different conversation — alongside artisan bread, single-origin chocolate, properly made coffee. A cookie that was, in the old sense, cultured. ## Why Both Matter We're not making cookies that taste like they came from a machine. We're not using artificial flavours, shortening, or shortcuts. Every batch is made by hand, in small quantities, with ingredients we'd eat on their own. The name is a promise. We intend to keep it.
